19 bridges in Põltsamaa

Põltsamaa is a small and lovely town situated just in the heart of Estonia. The area is known for its bridges, parks and roses, making it a romantic destination especially during summertime. The third longest river in Estonia – River Põltsamaa – flows through the town center.

Being a small town itself, Põltsamaa surprises its visitors with a total on 19 bridges crossing the River Põltsamaa, connecting the banks with river islands, or crossing the moat. Due to that, Põltsamaa is also called as Estonian capital of bridges. The newest of them are the Church Hill (Parvei) Bridge – a suspension bridge built in 2006 at a former bridge location – and Särtsu Bridge near the Rose islet. The river can be crossed via four bridges, but only one of them – The Great Bridge – is accessible by car. In 2013, the Great Bridge dam was renovated and a modern fish ladder was built there – it has been called the construction of the century in Põltsamaa.

Walking on the bridges and finding them all is a great spare time activity for locals and tourist. A free map of 19 bridges is available in Põltsamaa Castle Tourist Information. Should you like to have the bridges tour with a guide, you are welcome to order a guide via +372 775 1390 or loss@poltsamaa.ee.

When exploring the bridges, the order is not set – you can start the tour from any bridge!
